OCEAN ALLIANCE

Ocean Alliance, Inc. is a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit whose mission is to protect whales and their ocean environment through research, scientific collaboration, public education, and the arts.

With their Drones for whale research program, Ocean Alliance develops non-invasive tools to collect data on whales that increases our understanding of their ecological role, and how we can best protect them in a rapidly changing ocean. Ocean Alliance’s SnotBot program is a modified consumer drone that flies through the exhaled breath of a whale and collects “snot” on petri dishes. This provides valuable biological information and other indicators of a whale health. Drones can also collect a wide range of other data: such as measuring the size of whales, and attaching data tags.
